'Since I committed myself to do DIYs for you guys (I'm really not the crafty type. I always say it will be easy, but I think I'm just too lazy.) I had pastels lying around so I decided to look on Pinterest with some cool ideas. I found this drawing:
And I do have nice pastels and a notebook, so why not?
Step 1: Find the right pastels.
Step 1: Find the right pastels.
Sorry, my camera quality isn't so great. I have these Blick square pastels, 24 landscape colors. If you can't get those, try to find square pastels that are close to 24 colors.
Step 2: Find a notebook
Step 2: Find a notebook
I have the Strathmore Drawing paper, medium surface. I think any paper will be fine, and any size as well.
Step 3: Go to a fresh page.
Step 4: Take out a black pastel.

Step 4: Take out a black pastel.
Sorry if I'm posting too many pictures. I'm sure most of you know what a black pastel is.
Step 3: Draw the outline of the ears and head.
Step 3: Draw the outline of the ears and head.
Just a warning: Trust me when I say I'm no artist.
Step 4: Finish the head and add hairy lines to the ears.
Step 4: Finish the head and add hairy lines to the ears.
You have to be super careful with the trunk. One wrong move or one bad brother popping out to scare you could ruin the whole drawing.
Step 5: Add hints of purple.
Step 5: Add hints of purple.
I didn't have purple so I had to substitute it with a dark blue. And if you don't have either of those colors, you got the wrong pastel set. Sorry.
Step 6: Add the eyes
Step 6: Add the eyes
I was so afraid I was going to mess up! Anyway, you won't if you follow these directions. For the little circle of light, my pastel was too thick so I used a black pen. If you look at the Pinterest picture closely, you'll see certain spots were the black is thicker so don't forget to do that.
Step 7: Add the smudges . . . And the smile!
Step 7: Add the smudges . . . And the smile!
I kinda messed up . . . Oh well. It looks okay. Take the black pastel and scribble (Not hard or lightly) on the elephant's face and trunk, except don't get too close to it's eyes. Then smudge it together and any spaces left that are too white just rub your finger on the spot. Hopefully your fingers will be caked with black pastel (Which is what happened to me) and it will cover it with a light gray. For the smile, just arch up a thick black line from the front of the trunk as shown above. My original smile got smudged.
Step 8: Start the body
Step 8: Start the body
This time I really messed up, but it can all be fixed with a little smudging.
Step 9: Smudging the body
Step 9: Smudging the body
Step 10: This is the last step. Add a backround!
As shown in picture (1), you just take the pastel's long side and make small marks in both colors you want for the backround. I chose an orange and a bright red, but you can choose any colors you want. I wouldn't suggest any colors that aren't close on the color wheel, because I think they might mix into a brown, but I may be wrong. You can try anything you want.
